Strawberries are considered a “super food” because of their high vitamin mineral, fibre, and antioxidant content. Strawberries can be enjoyed raw, and used in salads, yoghurt or processed into jams.
Strawberries thrive in areas with cold winters and mild summers. They grow best in well – drained soils with a high organic matter content. Most of South Africa’s strawberries are produced in Brits, George, Paarl, and Stellenbosch. About half of the strawberries are produced outside, while the rest is produced under protection. This helps to protect the high – value crop against environmental elements and also lengthens the production season and improves quality.
Planting
You should buy and plant strawberry plants during March – April. The distance between the plants must be about 30cm. When planting ensure that the roots are buried properly. Make sure that the crowns are sitting just on top of the soil. Press down firmly on the soil surrounding the plants, cover the soil with mulch and water deeply.
Fertilization
Soil sampling levels are important and differ according to variety. No lime or phosphorous should be applied after planting as it has already been applied during soil preparation. However, regular applications of nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) throughout the season are essential. Potassium is vital for the formation of flowers and to ensure quality food.
Irrigation
Irrigation is necessary to produce quality fruit. Strawberries require 15mm to 25mm of irrigation per week. This will depend on the time of year and the stage of production. Sandy soils have low water holding capacities. It is therefore essential to apply small volumes of water at relatively short intervals, i.e 2 to 3 days between irrigation’s. Loamy and clayey soils should be applied with longer intervals between irrigation’s such as once every 4-5 days between irrigation’s.
Pest Control
Regular monitoring of pests is of utmost importance. This will ensure timely intervention in order to control the pests before the infestations reach critical levels.
